Hazardous Cargo Recovery: U-864
Prosub served as Client Representative for the Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket) on the 2026 offshore campaigns at the wreck of the German submarine U-864, which sank off Fedje, Norway, in 1945 carrying a cargo of metallic mercury.
Working at 150 to 175 m water depth, the campaign used controlled suction dredging to reach the keel, removed a keel plate section and gained access to six keel compartments. Mercury canisters and free liquid mercury were recovered by ROV, under environmental and wreck stability monitoring. The 22 canisters retrieved were the first ever recovered from the keel of U-864. The results from the campaign form part of the basis for the Norwegian authorities' decision on the future handling of the wreck.
